Rockhampton leads winners at annual AsiaHedge Awards

(Hong Kong, October 19th, 2006) - The Japan focused Rockhampton Fund claimed the blue riband Fund of the Year award at the fifth annual AsiaHedge Awards held in Hong Kong at the Marriott Hotel on 19th October.

In what has been a tough investment environment in many of the major strategies in the Asia-Pacific over the past year, the 2006 AsiaHedge Award nominations highlighted the excellent quality that many of the region’s hedge funds have to offer to investors.

It was also a night of firsts for funds managed from Singapore and Shanghai. Blackhorse Emerging Enterprises won the best Small & Mid-Cap Award while the Merchant Commodity Fund topped the field in the International category. This was the first time that portfolios managed from Singapore have won awards at the event.

Similarly, Pinpoint China, headquartered in Shanghai, claimed the plaudits in the best Single Country fund category with its China-focused strategy.

It was also an excellent year for the Absolute Partners Fund (winners in the Asia ex-Japan category) while Winnington Capital’s Trophy Fund managed to outpace its peers in the Asia including Japan category.

Basis Capital again won the best Fixed Income, High Yield & Distressed fund – for the third year running – having also won the Fund of the Year accolade in 2005.

In a particularly close race, the Ishin Fund, managed by Pine River in Minnesota, took the best Arbitrage, Market Neutral and Multi-Strategy award.

The new fund categories were also very close this year, ex-Japan in particular. Atlantis China Fortune, managed by Yang Liu from Hong Kong, became the first fund lead managed by a woman to win an AsiaHedge Award for several years – since HT Capital, managed by Ophelia Tong.

AlphaGen Pyxis took the New Fund Japan award – one of three nominations for Gartmore Asia-Pacific hedge funds in 2006 – the first time that a manager has been nominated for such a large number of AsiaHedge awards.

The nominees for Fund of the Year were: Absolute Partners, Basis Yield, CC Asia Absolute Return, Gladiator, Merchant and of course Rockhampton.
